Vannes in the gulf of Morbihan

Part of the "Artistic and Historical towns and areas" club

Historical heritage

The medieval town of Vannes owes the foundations of its fortified town to the Romans. At the end of the 14th century, the town became one of the favourite residences of the dukes of Brittany. The enclosed area was extended towards the port and doubled the size of the walled town. Within the walls, numerous wooden beamed houses dotted the narrow streets surrounding the cathedral, which was rebuilt at the beginning of the 15th century. When you're visiting Vannes, you can't miss the washhouses, St Pierre Cathedral, fortifications, Cohue's museum.

Vannes is a 60000 inhabitants city, centre of Morbihan. In old town centre, you can have a nice walking tour and also shopping. When you're getting out of the main road (N165) and follow the exit sign "Vannes Ouest - Le port", you will come to vannes main shopping mall where you can find sports shop and everything intended. On the west side of Vannes named Parc du Golfe, you find a small aquarium and a butterflies house. Cinemas, bowling and other leisure companies are at your disposal in Vannes.

From Vannes, you can easily travel to some islands. Ile d'Arz, Ile aux Moines, and even some much more far away from Vannes such as Belle Ile, Houat and Hoëdic are worth seeing. The main companies are situated in Parc du Golfe area (Navix, Compagnie du Golfe). You can go to Ile d'ARz from Conleau which makes the boat trip much shorter. The small islands Ile d'Arz and Ile aux Moines are perfect for a walking tour with children into real nature.

If you like walking, we can offer a nice walking tour along Vannes borders. This circuit alternates maritime landscapes bordering the Gulf of Morbihan, the nature reserve of the river Vincin, charm changing with the tide and a maze of urban roads close to the historic heart of the city of Vannes. Yellow signs. The circuit is marked in 2 directions. You can find many informations about hiking in Vannes on vannes tourist office website:
